Our Vision
The Redwood Art Association is a community dedicated to the creation of art as an important and indispensable part of life and the economy of Humboldt County.

Our Mission
Our mission is to serve our artists and their art by providing resources for exhibitions and education. We provide leadership to inspire the use of these resources for the creation of leading-edge possibilities to enrich our community.

Our Values
The Redwood Art Association is a community of artists and supporters who value art as an essential component of every aspect of our culture. We are a community that acknowledges and supports its members, nurtures artistic creativity, provides innovative and leading-edge ideas to inspire its members, dialogs and collaborates with its membership and other communities, and believes in positive action to create results.

To advance our mission, we will:

  • Continue to build an experienced, talented, energetic and creative Board of Directors.
  • Relate to young and emerging artists.

Lead

  • Focus on the total experience of art, both creating it and enjoying it.
  • Create venues that enhance the art experience.
  • Provide a leading-edge vision of art in our community.
  • Reach out, collaborate and cooperate.

Empower

  • Create conditions that establish success for exhibitions, sales and production of art.
  • Create workshops, lectures and presentations that enhance our appreciation of art.
  • Promote artists and their value to the world.

Background
The Redwood Art Association was founded in 1956 by a group of artists with a goal of promoting visual art in our community. In 2006, we celebrated our 50th Anniversary and honored our long history and those who contributed to the strength and vitality of the Association for these many years.

The Vision and Mission statements continue to serve as our springboard as we explore ways we can collaborate with other organizations, nurture our artistic creativity and support our members.

On June 15, 2012, the Redwood Art Association became the owner of the building at 603 F Street, Eureka. The location and elegant nature of the building are perfect for an art gallery. Having a permanent home is the fulfillment of a long-held dream and will allow us to step fully into our role of making art an indispensable part of life and the economy of Humboldt County.

Your membership is an important key to the accomplishment of our Vision and Mission. We invite you to enjoy and participate in our many activities.

Activities
The Redwood Art Association organizes and promotes large art exhibitions each year, some for its members and others open to all artists. Four exhibitions each year are professionally judged with monetary awards while other exhibitions showcase certain themed concepts. Please see the exhibition schedule for more information.

Additional activities and exhibitions:

HUMBOLDT PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION: A professionally judged show with monetary prizes open to all photographers in Humboldt County. This exhibition is in cooperation with the Eureka Photoshop Users Group and the Redwood Camera Club.

ART IN THE GARDEN: More Information. This annual fund-raising event offers the opportunity to observe and visit with artists as they ply their trade en plein air. Held each year in one of Humboldt County's extensive and magnificent private gardens, the afternoon includes artists in action, informational art lectures, wine, sweets and savories.

C STREET MARKET SQUARE ANNUAL SCULPTURE EXHIBITION: The Redwood Art Association curates this exhibition for the City of Eureka. The sculptures are an important aspect of the character and atmosphere of this newly completed part of Eureka's waterfront. This exhibition is in cooperation with the City of Eureka, Eureka Main Street, the Eureka Art and Culture Commission and The Ink People Center for the Arts.

ART AT THE CALIFORNIA REDWOOD COAST – HUMBOLDT COUNTY AIRPORT: Travelers arriving and departing the airport are welcomed by an impressive display of art by Humboldt County artists. The RAA coordinates this exhibit.

HAGOPIAN GALLERY: The RAA curates this public venue located on the second-floor of the Humboldt County Library.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAM: The Redwood Art Association believes strongly in supporting other organizations in our community that have activities involving art. Once a year or more, the RAA provides exhibition space for a school, club, team, educational group or non-profit organization to exhibit the art of its art related activity. To apply, please use the Art Exhibition Application.

SCHOLARSHIP FUND: The RAA maintains an art scholarship fund for art majors at College of the Redwoods. This is a perpetual fund with annual scholarships awarded only from interest earned in the account. Contributors to this fund by members are tax deductible. Scholarships totaling approximately $1000 or more are given each year.

WORKSHOPS: Art workshops taught by recognized local or regional artists/instructors.

LECTURES: Occasional talks by well-known local or out-of-the-area artists and art authorities on their work and working procedures.
